Market Like the Marines – Oorah!
By Andy Valadez, StealthMarketer/The Marketing Evangelist
Summary: From the Halls of Montezuma to the Cities of America. The Marines continue to appeal to the “hearts and minds” of young men and women, the citizenry at large. The Marines have no problem meeting their recruitment goals, challenging those who think they can become one (many recruits are sent back from bootcamp), and leaving an impression that is life-changing and “forever”. Now, wouldn’t you like people to say that about your company?

I love the Marines! The Marines promise you nothing, only the chance to become one. They do more with less and consistently meet their recruiting goals and churn out leaders in business, life and war. The “Green Machine” has been called on to appear in the rear view mirror of America’s foes, armed to the teeth and focused on the objective of defeating the enemy. You have heard them referred to as “The Few, The Proud”, “America’s 911”, “Devil Dogs”,“Grunts”, and seen them celebrated for their “Uncommon Valor”. Marines are “spit-shined”, “crew cut”, motivated warriors of the new millennia, locked and loaded, steadfast, and fierce. The Marine standards are high and they have managed to avoid the “political correctness” that has permeated our populace and remained a “force in readiness”. We do indeed sleep well at night, because they are on the front-lines of battle.
The “Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines” is very impressive for any company to study. I read this book several years ago and still enjoy reviewing it from time to time.

In the interest of full-disclosure, I am a little biased. I too went through Marine bootcamp and emerged out of the “grinder” a better man, one of the few. What inspired me to join the Marines, inspires me still today. I am an active member of the McLemore Detachment here locally and serve as Adjutant (www.MarineSuccess.com). I was no hero, but the guys I attend my meetings with sure were.
As a Marketer, I have learned to appeal to pride of the population. People love to feel like they are unique – smarter, braver, better-looking, frugal, strong, or successful. Those emotional cues are innate in our psyche. We want our children to attend the best schools (daycare to college), live in the nicest home we can afford, drive the best car, and the list goes on and on.
I always celebrate “great Marketing” and every company that has the confidence to stick their neck out into the marketplace. My biggest challenge is to get business owners off of the fence and start Marketing their company. The company who does this well stands to gain the advantage and become one of “The Few” companies who truly stand out above the rest!
